United States imported more than 5,000 tons of clams in the first quarter of 2023

According to the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), the United States imported more than 5,000 tons of clams from other countries in the first quarter of 2023. Its value more than $15 million, which downed 15% and 26% from the same period in 2022.undefined
In the first quarter of this year, the U.S. imported clams from 19 countries around the world. The top 5 countries exporting clams to the US are China, Canada, Vietnam, Indonesia and Thailand.
China accounted for 46% of the market share and 32% of the value. Meanwhile, Vietnamese clams have a market share of just 13.5% in the United States. Overall, clams imports from most of the major supplying countries have declined over the same period due to lower demand and a 12% decline in average import prices as well.
The average price of clams exported from Vietnam to the U.S. reached about $3/kg in the first quarter, which downed 11 percent. Export prices from China were also at the same level, down 12% compared to the same period last year.
In 2022, the U.S. imported a total of 22,000 tons of clams worth more than $76 million. Clams are the third most imported shellfish in the United States, after scallops and oysters.
